The overall minke whaling quota in Iceland this year is 216 animals; the season is set to start next month. The extension to apply for minke whaling permits at the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture expires on April 4.

“We have applied for permits and are preparing the boat. Our goal is to start whaling in the latter part of April,” Gunnar Bergmann Jónsson, managing director of Hrefnuveiðimenn ehf. which operates the minke whaling boat Hrafnreyður KÓ-100, told Morgunblaðið.

The “bomb squad” will demonstrate chemical tricks for the entire family at Reykjavík Art Museum, Ásmundarsafn building, on Sunday at 2 pm.

First the exhibition by Magnús Árnason will be observed, in which a scientific experiment with references to French chemist Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) is featured.

First female candidate for Iceland presidential election 2012 Herdís Þorgeirsdóttir has decided to submit her candidacy for this June’s election for the President of Iceland.

She declared her intention to run at a press conference at Reykjavík Art Museum yesterday. She is the first woman to stand for President so far for this year’s election – and her decision follows a groundswell of public support for the professor to stand; not least on Facebook.

Herdís is 58 years-old, is a doctor of law, and is a certified lawyer and a political scientist. She was made a professor at Bifröst University in 2004. She is also one of the owners...

Neighbours ask police for less love, more peace Residents complained to the police because they were tired of the noise coming from a flat in their block in Reykjavík one recent weekend night.

Icelandic police made their way to the scene expecting to find a rowdy and busy house party in progress, Vísir.is reported. However, according to police records, that did not turn out to be the case: the only occupants of the apartment were a man and a woman. More specifically, newlyweds and the noise was not down to any trouble going on.

From March 29 to April, people in Reykjavík will have the opportunity to view the Icelandic horse up close during the annual Icelandic Horse Festival 2012.

On Saturday, both horses and jockeys will roam the city streets in downtown Reykjavík, and various activities will take place by the City Hall. City people will get the chance to ride a horse with the assistance of a seasoned jockey, and attend lectures about horses, the history of horses in Iceland and their behavior.
Guests are also invited to learn how to do the Lindy Hop, Vísir

The temperature reached 19.6°C (67.3°F) at an automatic weather observation post run by the Icelandic Road Administration at Kvísker in Öræfi, southeast Iceland, yesterday, and one degree lower by the Icelandic Meteorological Office’s automatic post in the same location.
