Filming for Christopher Nolan’s latest movie Interstellar began in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, South Iceland, yesterday. All hotels in the vicinity are fully booked and some of the town’s inhabitants have leased their houses to the film crew. Summer house owners in the region have done the same.

Approximately 120 people live in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, so with the arrival of the Interstellar crew of 300, the population has tripled, ruv.is reports.

The movie’s biggest stars, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey, arrived in Kirkjubæjaklaustur on Monday and yesterday morning.

The village’s inhabitants have pledged confidentiality on what goes on there during filming, which is estimated to take two weeks.

Shooting mostly takes place at Orrustuhóll in the Eldhraun lava field and at Svínafellsjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull.

Rangers at Vatnajökull National Park have authorized Sagafilm, who assist the film crew in Iceland, to close certain walking paths in the area.
