The police have recently arrested a number of individuals involved in criminal gangs. They have now begun investigating the possibility that members of these same gangs have been guilty of tax evasion and fraudulently receiving benefits from the social security system. According to Morgunblaðið’s sources, fraud of this nature has been conducted for a long time, mbl.is reports.

In the last few days and weeks, the police have had some success in the battle against criminal gangs such as Hell’s Angels and Outlaws. Ögmundur Jónasson, Minister of the Interior, told Morgunblaðið last weekend that the authorities’ operations are having an effect. He does, however, not agree with the Commissioner at the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police, Stefán Eiríksson, that all operations of criminal gangs should be banned. Stefán had previously told Morgunblaðið that the police suggested on numerous occasions that such operations should be banned and that it was a mistake that they had not already been banned, mbl.is reported last Friday.
