Medical Director of Health Geir Gunnlaugsson believes that the measures taken because of the faulty PIP breast implants were normal. It would have been irresponsible to inform all 440 women who had such implants in the spring of 2010 that they had been taken off the European market, he reasoned.
The Directorate of Health. “When Jens [Kjartansson, plastic surgeon] came to a meeting with the medical director of health in 2010 to discuss the PIP implants, there was no information about their potential danger. Things change later on, discussions grew and took a new course,” Geir told Morgunblaðið on Friday. Geir is dissatisfied with an employee of the Directorate of Health who attended the meeting with Jens being implicated in the case. “The responsibility in this matter is completely that of the medical director of health,” he stated.
