Prime Minister of Iceland Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir announced last weekend that the government intends to contribute ISK 1.5 billion (USD 13 million, EUR 9 million) to the 100th anniversary fund of the University of Iceland until 2014.

The university’s rector, Kristín Ingólfsdóttir, described the move as progressive in times of difficulties in state finances. “It is very important for us to develop the school with similar funding as we see in our neighboring countries.” Rector of Reykjavík University Ari Kristinn Jónsson told Fréttabladid that he now expects the government to have adopted a new policy towards the operations of Icelandic universities, agreeing that they must be able to compete with other institutions of higher education in the OECD countries. “I expect that there will be a continuation of increasing contributions to all universities in the country. This can only be the first step,” he commented. ESA
