He explained that as the number of asylum seekers grows the directorate’s finances diminish, as stated in Morgunbladid yesterday, which can turn into a hazardous and vicious cycle, the minister told the newspaper. Jónasson therefore proposes that the funding arrangement be changed in the coming budget and will follow up on it. The affairs of asylum seekers have often been up for debate in Iceland with the asylum seekers themselves sometimes taking desperate measures to protest how long it takes to process their applications. Minister of the Interior Ögmundur Jónasson said it is important to separate the operations of the Directorate of Immigration and the funding of facilities for asylum seekers and intends to bring that up at a cabinet meeting shortly.
