Torfhildur Torfadóttir, the oldest Icelander who turned 107 on May 24, passed away in Ísafjördur, the West Fjords, yesterday. She was born in Asparvík in Kaldrananeshreppur in 1904 and was the youngest of 11 siblings.

She was raised in Selárdalur in Steingrímsfjördur and spent the latter part of her teens as a farmhand in Reykhólasveit in Austur-Bardastrandasýsla in the southern West Fjords, as stated on bb.is.

Torfadóttir later moved to Ísafjördur, the West Fjords’ capital, where she married fisherman Einar Jóelsson. He passed away in 1981.

They had five children, three of whom are alive today, Torfi (61), Sigurbjörn (69) and Kristín (78). Longevity runs in the family as a few of Torfadóttir’s siblings also reached a ripe age: Ásgeir turned 100, Eymundur 96 and Gudbjörg 91.

Torfadóttir, who holds the record for being older than any other inhabitant of the West Fjords, spent the last years of her life at the gerontology ward of the regional hospital in Ísafjördur.

According to Fréttabladid, Torfadóttir remained active despite her old age; at 102 she participated in the nationwide Women’s Run with her walker and was the oldest contestant.

Gudrídur Gudbrandsdóttir, who turned 105 in May, is now the oldest living Icelander.
