No one was harmed when the loft apartment of an apartment complex on Nesvegur in the western part of Reykjavík caught fire yesterday evening. The fire department was notified shortly after 7 pm and had extinguished most of it in a half an hour.
From western Reykjavík. Photo by Páll Stefánsson. Six to eight people were inside the three-storey building when the fire started but managed to get out in time. The person living in the loft apartment where the fire originated wasn’t at home, Morgunbladid reports. The loft apartment was severely damaged in the fire and may be completely ruined. Other apartments were also damaged to a lesser extent due to smoke. It seems the fire started in a particular room but the cause of the fire is unknown and will be investigated. According to visir.is, it is suspected that cannabis was being grown illegally inside the apartment where the fire started; heat lamps were mentioned as a possible cause.
