Gardarshólmur’s home will be an old herring plant at the Húsavík harbor renovated to suit the purposes of the new center.

A partnership agreement with the University of Iceland, the University of Copenhagen and the University of Stockholm will be signed after the inauguration ceremony.

The purpose of the center is to demonstrate the relationship between man and nature; how man shapes nature and how nature shapes man.

The theme of the first series of lectures held in the center will be an overview of the institutions involved in the project, individual contributions and the preparation for the opening of the center.

Gardarshólmur will be open to all during Sail Húsavík, a traveling Nordic coastal cultural festival, which coincides with the annual Maerudagar (“Sweet Days”) Húsavík town festival.

There, visitors can learn more about and share their views of conservation, cultivation, consumer patterns, modes of production, culture and related topics.
