Yesterday, the athletes representing Iceland on the Special Olympics witnessed confrontation between protestors and the riot police outside their hotel.

Gudmundur Sigurdsson, one of the athletes, told Morgunbladid he had witnessed protestors setting cars on fire and police throw teargas in an attempt to disperse the group.

“The protests were at first isolated to the center but earlier today we noticed protestors had made their way to the Omonia train station. Last night 40 to 50 protestors appeared in a sidestreet by our hotel and they were heading to the National Archaeological Museum, Athen’s largest museum. They lit bins on fire and the police greeted them with teargas,” Gudmundur told Morgunbladid.

The group is staying at the Best Western Union and the situation outside the hotel has quieted down.

Gudmundur’s photos from the riots can be found in the link to Morgunbladid.
