The residents of Grundarhverfi on Kjalarnes, a small settlement just north of Reykjavík, invite visitors to join them in a family celebration this weekend. The festivities begin with a parade tomorrow at 11 am.

In Hveragerdi, southwest Iceland, the horticulture and flower festival Blóm í bae began today and continues throughout the weekend.

Among events in the Kjalarnes festival are boat trips, horseback riding, history walks and a market in the community center Fólksvangur, mbl.is reports.

On Sunday there will be a religious ceremony at Esjuberg where the first church was built in Iceland. The cultural program of the day includes information on Celtic Christendom and monks, known as papar, in Icelandic.

The family festival in Kjalarnes and the flower festival in Hveragerdi are only two of many festivals held around Iceland this weekend to commemorate Jónsmessa, Midsummer Day.
