Linda Björk Magnúsdóttir, an Icelandic citizen who was sentenced to 21 months in prison in the US last year after having entered the country illegally through the Canadian border and then escaped from a courthouse, has now been released.

Magnúsdóttir’s father, Magnús Thór Sigmundsson, told mbl.is last week that she was released on May 14 or 15 but has been waiting at a detention facility since then for the authorities to complete processing her case and deport her.

This process can take up to ten days and Sigmundsson expected his daughter to arrive in Iceland soon. He has contacted her through the internet; US prison authorities have established a special connection for relatives of detainees.

“She sounds unbelievably positive, despite everything,” he said.
