valur-logo Valur from Reykjavík became the League Cup Champion in men’s football for the second time by beating Fylkir, also from Reykjavík, 3-1 in an extended game in the indoor football arena Kórinn in Kópavogur.

According to Morgunbladid, this is the second title earned by Valur in the pre-season; they also became Reykjavík Champion.

The Icelandic Championship in men’s football begins next weekend with a game between KR and Breidablik, both from Reykjavík.

In other football news, Hermann Hreidarsson became the third Icelandic footballer to break the 500-game barrier when he played his 500th league game last weekend when his team Portsmouth met Swansea in the English Championship.

The Icelandic record is held by Arnór Gudjohnsen who played a total of 523 league games in his career. The third is Ívar Imgimarsson with 512 games, as stated on mbl.is.

Meanwhile, Icelandic national team member in women’s football Katrín Ómarsdóttir signed a contract with the Orange County Waves in California. The team will play in the WPSL (Women’s Premiere Soccer League) this summer.
