Caricaturist Helgi Sigurdsson at the daily newspaper Morgunbladid issued an apology to Progressive Party MP Siv Fridleifsdóttir (pictured) after having depicted her as a prostitute in the newspaper on Saturday.
The caricature prompted a harsh reaction from the National Union of Progressive Party Women, calling it “distasteful” and demanding an immediate apology.
Sigurdsson’s statement, published in Morgunbladid yesterday, reads:
“A metaphor distorts reality! In a caricature which was published in the paper on Saturday an image was drawn up of the parliamentarian Siv Fridleifsdóttir in a context which could harm her person and the undersigned has personally apologized to the MP. The illustration is a metaphor and was not intended to cause harm but rather to put forth sharp criticism and entertain readers. Helgi Sigurdsson, illustrator.”
