The crew of the freezer trawler Málmey from Saudárkrókur in northwest Iceland ask whether the national referendum on the new Icesave legislation isn’t illegal given that a certain group of voters such as themselves are unable to vote.

In an email to visir.is, the fishermen point out that a great number of freezer trawler employees had gone fishing before the advance polling began and won’t return to shore until after the referendum on Saturday. The fishermen feel that their democratic right is being violated and wonder whether those in charge of the referendum consider them second-class citizens. Recent polls indicate that a slim majority of voters are planning to reject the Icesave legislation in the upcoming referendum. ESA
