Man Sentenced to Prison for Serious Assault

Reykjavík District Court.

Gudmundsson was found guilty of having kicked a man so that he fell down concrete stairs and then repeatedly kicking and stepping on his head, Fréttabladid reports.

Neither the perpetrator nor the victim said they remembered what happened but three independent witnesses described the aforementioned events.

Three other witnesses, who were all connected with Gudmundsson, said the victim had simply fallen down the stairs. Their testimonies were not considered credible.

Gudmundsson is also to pay the victim ISK 1 million (USD 8,600, EUR 6,200) in damages.

In November last year, Gudmundsson was convicted of two serious assaults, robbery and other violations. He had not begun serving his two and a half year prison sentence when he attacked the man on January 1.

The victim suffered severe injuries. He has had problems moving his hands and feet, suffered memory loss and speech impairment. His eyesight is also impaired, he has a chronic headache and has not been sleeping well.

He is in rehabilitation but according to the verdict, it is likely that he some of his injuries are permanent.
